Do Not Test the Lord
Devotions this week are based on Week 1 of Temptation to Triumph: Temptation (WATCH HERE)
Matthew 4:5–7 Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6 “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written:
“ ‘He will command his angels concerning you,
and they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’”
7 Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
The second temptation is more subtle than the first. This time the devil takes Jesus to the pinnacle of the temple and quotes Scripture. “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down, for it is written…” The enemy now sounds religious. He cites Psalm 91 and speaks of angels and protection. The temptation is wrapped in Bible language.
But the heart of it is dangerous. It is an invitation to force God’s hand. Jump. Make the Father prove His care. Create a public spectacle that will remove all doubt. The whisper beneath the words is familiar. “If God truly loves You, He will show it dramatically. If You really trust Him, You should take this leap.”
In Genesis, the serpent questioned God’s character. “You will not surely die.” The lie suggested that God’s warning was exaggerated and His motives suspect. Here again, the enemy manipulates truth to distort trust. The temptation is not to abandon faith, but to twist it. Instead of trusting quietly, Jesus is urged to demand visible proof.
This temptation plays out in our lives whenever we bargain with God. We say in our hearts, “If You fix this, then I will trust You. If You heal this relationship, then I will believe You are good.” We create tests, often silently, to measure whether God is faithful. Anxiety fuels the demand. Pride strengthens it. We want assurance on our terms.
Jesus responds with clarity. “Again it is written, You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.” He quotes from Deuteronomy, recalling Israel’s failure at Massah where they demanded water and questioned whether the Lord was among them. Testing God is not faith. It is unbelief dressed in spiritual language. It seeks control rather than connection.
Jesus refuses to manipulate the Father. He will not stage a miracle to secure applause or eliminate vulnerability. He entrusts Himself to the Father without spectacle. His obedience here preserves the purity of faith. True trust does not demand constant proof. It rests in what God has already revealed.
For us, this moment is both comfort and correction. It comforts us because Jesus resisted where we often falter. His obedience is part of the righteousness credited to us. He did not test the Father, even when the suggestion came clothed in Scripture. But it also corrects us. It invites us to examine how often our prayers are subtle negotiations rather than surrendered trust.
The cross itself will be the ultimate answer to the question of God’s faithfulness. There, love is displayed fully and finally. We do not need to create tests for God because He has already proven His heart in Christ.
This week, when doubt stirs and the urge for proof rises, remember that faith rests in God’s character, not in constant confirmation. The Father does not need to be tested. He has already shown Himself faithful.
Reflect: In what areas of your life are you tempted to demand proof of God’s care? How might resting in what God has already revealed free you from anxious bargaining?
Prayer: Lord, forgive me for the ways I have tested You instead of trusting You. Quiet my anxious heart and deepen my confidence in Your character. Teach me to rest in Your promises without demanding signs. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Trust in God’s Provision!
Devotions this week are based on Week 1 of Temptation to Triumph: Temptation (WATCH HERE)
Matthew 4:2-4 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”
4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
After forty days of fasting, Jesus is hungry. The tempter comes not with an outrageous evil but with something that appears reasonable. “If You are the Son of God, command these stones to become bread.” The suggestion is subtle. There is no command to steal, no invitation to violence. It is simply an appeal to meet a legitimate need in an illegitimate way.
The temptation is not about bread alone. It is about trust. Will Jesus rely on the Father’s provision, or will He take matters into His own hands. The enemy presses on identity. “If You are the Son of God.” Prove it. Provide for yourself. Act independently. The whisper underneath is the same one heard in Eden. Did God really say? Can He really be trusted? Should you not secure your own well being?
In Genesis, the fruit was described as good for food. The issue was never hunger. The issue was distrust. Adam and Eve doubted God’s goodness and reached for what He had not given. They chose self determination over obedience. Jesus stands in a barren place with real hunger and faces the same fundamental choice.
This temptation plays out in our lives in countless ordinary ways. We feel financial pressure and cut ethical corners. We feel emotional emptiness and seek comfort in unhealthy relationships. We feel overlooked and manufacture opportunities to prove ourselves. The need may be real, but the solution bypasses trust. We convince ourselves that urgency justifies independence.
Jesus answers with Scripture. “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” He quotes from Deuteronomy, reminding us that life is sustained not merely by physical provision but by the faithful promise of God. Bread feeds the body for a day. The Word anchors the soul forever. Jesus refuses to separate physical need from spiritual dependence. He will not use His power apart from the Father’s will.
His response exposes the lie. The lie says survival is ultimate. The truth says obedience is ultimate. The lie says secure yourself first. The truth says trust the Father completely. Jesus chooses to hunger rather than to act independently. In doing so, He begins to reverse the distrust that began in Eden.
Our salvation rests not only on the cross but on Christ’s perfect obedience in moments like this. Where we have grasped and scrambled and taken control, He trusted. His righteousness is credited to us. Yet His example also calls us higher. When temptation whispers that God is slow or absent, we cling to His Word. When we feel the ache of lack, we remember that real life flows from His promises.
This week, consider where you are tempted to create your own bread. The Spirit invites you to trust rather than strive. Hunger may remain for a season, but the Father remains faithful.
Reflect: Where are you most tempted to take control instead of trusting God’s provision? What specific promise from Scripture can anchor you when you feel lack or urgency?
Prayer: Father, You know the places where I feel hunger and fear. Forgive me for the times I have trusted my own solutions more than Your Word. Teach me to live by every promise You have spoken. Strengthen my faith to wait for Your provision in Your time. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Led to Be Tempted!
Devotions this week are based on Week 1 of Temptation to Triumph: Temptation (WATCH HERE)
Matthew 4:1-2 “Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.”
That phrase is startling. Jesus was not merely led into solitude. He was led to be tempted.
The Spirit’s purpose was not accidental exposure to danger but intentional confrontation with the enemy. Before Jesus preached a sermon, healed the sick, or called a disciple, He faced the adversary. The mission of redemption would require more than compassion and power. It would require obedience under temptation.
Why would the Spirit lead Him there?
Because salvation would not be accomplished only by dying for sinners. It would also require living faithfully where sinners fail. From the beginning, humanity’s story had been marked by temptation. In Genesis, the serpent approached Adam and Eve not with force but with suggestion. “Did God really say?” The fall began with doubt and culminated in disobedience.
If Jesus is the second Adam, then He must stand where the first Adam fell. The Spirit leads Him to the very battleground that defined humanity’s ruin. This is not recklessness. It is redemption unfolding.
Notice that Jesus does not seek temptation, nor does He avoid it. He enters it in obedience. There is holy intentionality here. The Father is not trying to see whether the Son might sin. The Father is displaying that the Son will not. The testing reveals the perfection already present.
Temptation exposes allegiance. Will the Son trust the Father’s provision? Will He rely on the Father’s timing? Will He worship the Father alone? Each question echoes Eden. Each response of Jesus writes the salvation story.
The Spirit leads Jesus into temptation because temptation is where victory must be won. The cross will deal with the penalty of sin. The wilderness begins to deal with the obedience that sin required. Where Adam grasped, Jesus refuses. Where Israel grumbled in the desert, Jesus trusts. Where we waver daily, He stands firm.
This means that when we face temptation, we are not observing a distant example. We are witnessing our salvation being secured. Jesus resists not only to model righteousness, but to fulfill it on our behalf.
There is comfort in this truth. The Spirit did not lead Jesus into temptation to destroy Him but to demonstrate Him. What looked like vulnerability was actually the unveiling of perfect trust. The battle was real, but so was the obedience.
Lent calls us to consider why temptation exists in our lives. It is not merely an inconvenience. It is a revealing. It shows what we trust and whom we worship. Yet unlike Christ, we often falter. Our hope is not that we will perfectly resist. Our hope is that He already has.
The Spirit led Him to be tempted so that when we are tempted, we would have a faithful Savior who understands our weakness and has overcome in our place.
Reflect: How does knowing that Jesus was intentionally led to confront temptation deepen your understanding of His mission? In your current struggles, what might God be revealing about your trust and allegiance?
Prayer: Lord Jesus, You did not avoid the battle that I so often lose. You entered temptation willingly and stood firm. Thank You for obeying where I have failed. Strengthen my trust and shape my heart through every trial, knowing that Your victory is already mine. Amen.
The Name Above Every Name
This week’s devotions are based on Week 6 of David: Finding Peace in Jesus (WATCH HERE)
Philippians 2:9-11 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
From the drastic descent to the highest glory, Philippians 2:9-11 lifts our eyes from the humiliation of the cross to the exaltation of Christ. “Therefore God has highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name” (Philippians 2:9). The descent into suffering was not the end of the story. The Father raised the Son. The One who stooped lowest has been lifted highest.
Lent teaches us to walk the downward path with Jesus, but it also reminds us where that path leads. The cross is not defeat. It is the doorway to glory. Because Christ humbled Himself in obedience, God exalted Him in victory. Now at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father (Philippians 2:10-11).
This is not merely future poetry. It is present reality. Jesus is Lord now. After His resurrection He declared, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me” (Matthew 28:18). Peter proclaims, “God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified” (Acts 2:36). The exaltation of Christ assures us that humility is not wasted and suffering is not final.
Consider a seed buried deep in the soil. In the darkness it seems forgotten. Yet beneath the surface life is stirring. In time it breaks through the ground and rises toward the sun. The burial was not the end. It was the beginning of visible growth. So it was with Christ. So it is with those who belong to Him.
Romans 14:11 echoes the promise: “As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.” One day all opposition will cease. Pride will crumble. Every rival name will fade. Only one Name will remain.
This truth guides our heart during Lent. In a culture that exalts self, we kneel before Christ. In a world that multiplies names and platforms, we cling to the Name above every name.
As we journey toward the cross, we remember that the One who reigns is the One who was pierced. The hands that hold all authority still bear scars. His exaltation is not harsh domination. It is crucified love. To bow before Him is to find life.
Reflect: How does the end of the path in glory through Christ affect the path you are walking today? What would it look like to recognize the power and authority of Christ more fully today?
Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are the Name above every name. You humbled Yourself and the Father has exalted You. Teach me to bow gladly before You now. Rule my heart, guide my choices, and steady my hope. May my life confess that You are Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Amen.
A Humbling Descent
This week’s devotions are based on Week 6 of David: Finding Peace in Jesus (WATCH HERE)
Philippians 2:5-8 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,
7 but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself
and became obedient to death—even death on a cross!
What a breathtaking descent! Though Jesus was God, He did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped. He emptied Himself. He took the form of a servant. He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
Christ did not grasp at glory. He did not demand recognition. He did not force the crown. He entrusted Himself to the Father’s will and timing. His path was downward before it was upward. The cross came before the crown.
Lent trains our hearts in this same pattern. But it’s hard. We live in a world that urges us to build our name, defend our image, and secure our platform. Yet the way of Jesus is humbleness. He gave up his glory in heaven to travel the way of the cross. He gave up his position in heaven for a time to come to earth to secure our position in heaven forever.
David understood humility. Though anointed king in 1 Samuel 16:13, he did not seize Saul’s throne when the opportunity came. In 1 Samuel 24:6 he said, “I will not put out my hand against my lord, for he is the Lord’s anointed.” David waited on the Lord in caves before he ruled in Jerusalem. He was faithful when no one was looking. He trusted that God would unveil the throne in His time.
Lent invites us to examine whether we are striving for recognition or trusting the Father who sees in secret and rewards in secret (Matthew 6:4). Lent opens our heart to expose pride. Lent brings us to our knees to recognize the gravity of our sin.
The heart of our Savior is incredible. The most humiliating death one could have was the “ceremony of torture” found in the Roman cross. Yet he was willing to let go of all his pride to give his life for you and me. The cross was the ultimate descent. Yet Jesus did it to serve us.
Reflect: Am I striving for recognition instead of trusting God’s timing? How can I practice humility today in a concrete and quiet way?
Prayer: Lord Jesus, You did not grasp at glory but humbled Yourself for my sake. Shape my attitude after Yours. Guard my heart from pride and impatience. Prepare me in the shadows for whatever light You choose to give. Amen.
