2 Corinthians 5:18–19 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.

Have you ever watched two people who care deeply about each other stop talking? Sometimes it happens because of one hurtful comment. Other times it is years of misunderstandings and bitterness that slowly build a wall between them. The relationship that was once close becomes distant, and both sides wonder if things will ever be the same again.

Broken relationships are painful because God created us for fellowship. We long to be at peace with one another. Yet the greatest broken relationship is not between two people. It is the one that existed between sinful humanity and a holy God.

That is why Paul’s words are so beautiful: “All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ.”

Notice who takes the first step. It is not us.

God does.

We did not climb our way back to Him. We did not earn another chance. We did not convince Him to overlook our sins. God Himself acted. He sent His Son to bear our guilt, satisfy His justice, and restore the relationship that sin had shattered. At the cross, Jesus bridged the gap we could never cross.

Reconciliation is more than simply calling a truce. It is restoring a relationship. Through Christ, God no longer looks at you as His enemy but as His beloved child. The separation has been removed. Peace has been made.

Paul then says something remarkable. God “has committed to us the message of reconciliation.”

Think about that. The people who have received God’s forgiveness are now entrusted with sharing that same forgiveness with others. Christians are not simply recipients of grace. We are messengers of grace.

That begins close to home.

It happens when a husband and wife choose forgiveness over bitterness. It happens when parents and children seek reconciliation instead of letting resentment grow. It happens when Christians refuse to let anger have the final word because Christ’s forgiveness has already spoken a better one.

Forgiving others does not mean pretending sin never happened or excusing real hurt. It means giving up the right to get even and entrusting justice to God.

There will always be people who are difficult to love. There will be wounds that are slow to heal. But as you remember the immeasurable debt Christ canceled for you, the Holy Spirit gives you strength to extend that same grace to others.

The Gospel is never meant to stop with us. God reconciles us to Himself so that, through our words and actions, others might hear and experience the reconciling love of Christ.

Reflect: Is there someone with whom you need to pursue peace or offer forgiveness this week? How does remembering God’s reconciliation with you change the way you approach broken relationships?

Prayer: Gracious Father, thank You for reconciling me to Yourself through the death and resurrection of Your Son. When I am tempted to hold on to bitterness or seek revenge, remind me of the mercy You have shown me. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit so that I may reflect Your forgiving love in my home, my church, and my community. Make me an instrument of Your peace and a faithful messenger of the reconciliation found in Christ alone. In His name I pray. Amen.

John 20:19–23 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.

21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”

Imagine the scene. It is the evening of Easter Sunday. The disciples are huddled together behind locked doors. They are afraid of the Jewish leaders. They are confused by the reports of the empty tomb. And perhaps most of all, they are haunted by their own failures.

Peter had denied Jesus three times.

The others had fled when Jesus was arrested.

None of them had stood faithfully at the cross.

If anyone deserved a lecture, it was this group.

If anyone should have expected Jesus to walk through the door and ask, “Where were you?” it was them.

Instead, the risen Savior appears in their midst with a single greeting: “Peace be with you.”

Jesus is announcing the result of everything He accomplished through His death and resurrection. The war between God and sinners has ended. The debt of sin has been paid.

Notice what Jesus does next. He shows them His hands and His side. The peace He announces is grounded in nail scars and a pierced side. His wounds are the proof that their sins have been forgiven.

Then Jesus breathes on them and says, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”

What an incredible moment. The very first gift the risen Christ gives through the Holy Spirit is the gift of forgiveness.

Sometimes we think of the Holy Spirit primarily as the One who gives courage, wisdom, or strength. He certainly does those things. But before He sends believers into the world, He first delivers the forgiveness Jesus won on the cross. The Holy Spirit always points us to Christ and His saving work. He does not draw attention to Himself. He brings us the peace that only Jesus can give.

That is still how the Holy Spirit works today.

Every time you hear God’s Word proclaim that Christ died for sinners, the Holy Spirit is at work.

Every time you confess your sins and hear the pastor announce, “I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,” the Holy Spirit is placing Christ’s forgiveness into your heart.

Every time you receive the Lord’s Supper, the Holy Spirit strengthens your faith through Christ’s body and blood given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins.

Think of forgiveness like a priceless package that Jesus purchased at Calvary. The Holy Spirit is the One who faithfully delivers that package to your doorstep again and again through the means of grace. He does not simply tell you that forgiveness exists somewhere out there. He places it into your hands. He says, “This is for you.”

There will be days when your conscience reminds you of yesterday’s failures. There will be moments when Satan whispers that God must be tired of forgiving you. When those voices grow loud, remember what Jesus said to frightened disciples hiding behind locked doors. He did not begin with condemnation. He began with peace.

That peace is not earned. It is received. It is Christ’s gift to sinners who desperately need His grace. And because it is His gift, no sin is greater than His forgiveness, and no failure is stronger than His resurrection.

Reflect: What fears, regrets, or guilty memories tend to lock the door of your heart, and how does Jesus’ greeting, “Peace be with you,” speak directly to them? How can you more intentionally receive and treasure the Holy Spirit’s gifts of forgiveness?

Prayer: Risen Lord Jesus, thank You for speaking peace to fearful sinners. Thank You for bearing my sins in Your body on the cross and rising again to assure me that my forgiveness is complete. When guilt or fear threatens to overwhelm me, remind me that Your peace rests not on my performance but on Your finished work. Help me to live each day with the confidence that I am fully forgiven and deeply loved because of You. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.

2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has gone, the new has come!”

If you were handed a blank name tag and asked to write one word that describes you, what would you write?

Many of us would be tempted to write something that reflects our greatest failure or deepest insecurity. We may not literally write “Failure,” “Guilty,” “Ashamed,” or “Not Enough,” but those labels often become the quiet soundtrack of our lives. We replay past mistakes. We remember hurtful words. We carry regrets that seem impossible to escape. Over time, those experiences begin to define us.

Satan loves to hand out those name tags. He is called “the accuser” for a reason. He wants you to believe that your worst sin is your truest identity. If he can convince you that you will always be the person who failed, then he has succeeded in keeping your eyes off of Christ.

But God has something entirely different to say.

Paul writes, “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.” Notice what he does not say. He does not say, “If anyone tries harder…” or “If anyone cleans up their life…” or “If anyone finally gets everything together…” He says, “If anyone is in Christ.”

That changes everything.

The Holy Spirit has united you to Christ through the Gospel. In your Baptism, He claimed you as God’s own child. Through the Word, He continues to strengthen your faith. Through absolution, He speaks Christ’s forgiveness directly into your ears. Through the Lord’s Supper, He places into your hands the very body and blood that purchased your salvation. Again and again, the Holy Spirit reminds you that your standing before God does not rest on your performance but on Christ’s perfect righteousness.

Imagine wearing a name tag that says, “Guilty.” Then someone removes it and replaces it with another that says, “Forgiven.” That is more than positive thinking. It is God’s declaration. Because Jesus carried your guilt to the cross, the Father no longer identifies you by your sin. He identifies you by His Son.

The old has gone.

That old identity, condemned under the Law, has been crucified with Christ. The new has come.

You are forgiven.

You are God’s beloved child.

You are a new creation.

This does not mean you will never struggle with sin again. The old sinful nature still clings to us in this life. There are days when the old name tag seems easier to believe than the new one. Yet every day the Holy Spirit calls you back to your Baptism, where the old Adam is drowned and the new person rises to live before God in righteousness and purity forever.

Martin Luther encouraged Christians to begin each day by remembering their Baptism. Why? Because Baptism is not merely something that happened once. It is God’s continuing promise that you belong to Christ. When guilt whispers, “You’ll never change,” God answers, “You are My child.” When shame says, “You are still the same person,” God declares, “You are a new creation.”

So today, ask yourself this question: Which name tag are you wearing? The one the world gives? The one your conscience keeps writing? Or the one Christ has already given you?

There is only one that tells the truth.

Reflect: What labels or failures are you tempted to let define your identity instead of Christ’s forgiveness? How does remembering your Baptism and God’s declaration that you are His child change the way you face today?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Your Son to bear my guilt and remove the shame of my sin. Through Your Holy Spirit, remind me each day that I am not defined by my failures but by Christ’s forgiveness. Help me to live confidently as Your beloved child and as a new creation in Jesus. When I am tempted to listen to the accusations of Satan or my own conscience, turn my eyes again to the cross and to the promises You have given me in Your Word and Sacraments. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Luke 10:36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”

37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”

Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

Jesus ends the conversation with a simple command.

“Go and do likewise.”

Those words are not a burden.

They are an invitation.

Because Christ has made you His own, you now get to live as His hands and feet in the world.

Notice that Jesus does not tell us to search for extraordinary opportunities.

He simply sends us back into ordinary life.

Your neighbor may be sitting across the breakfast table.

Working in the office next door.

Standing beside you in the checkout line.

Worshiping in the pew behind you.

God has already placed your mission field around you. Ironically, the opportunities are often wonderfully ordinary.

You encourage.

You forgive.

You visit.

You listen.

You serve.

You pray.

These simple acts become powerful because Christ works through them.

One day you may discover that a simple conversation, a meal delivered, or a quiet prayer became the very way God reminded someone they were not alone.

You may never know the eternal impact.

But God does.

Every morning you can ask a simple question:

“Lord, who needs to experience Your love through me today?”

He will answer.

Not with a dramatic revelation.

But by placing ordinary neighbors in your ordinary path.

And as you love them, you will discover something remarkable.

The more you serve, the more clearly you see the heart of the One who first served you.

Reflect: Who has God already placed in your path today? What one act of mercy can you intentionally offer before this day is over?

Prayer: Father, thank You for calling me not only to receive Your mercy but also to share it. Lead me to the neighbors You have already placed around me. Fill me with the love of Christ so that my words, actions, and attitudes point others to the Savior who first loved me. In His name I pray. Amen.

Luke 10:36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”

37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”

The hero of Jesus’ story shocked His listeners.

It was not the priest.

Not the Levite.

It was the Samaritan.

The very person many Jews would have considered an outsider became the example of godly love.

Jesus has a way of breaking down the walls we like to build.

We naturally divide people into categories.

People like me.

People unlike me.

People who deserve kindness.

People who probably do not.

But the Gospel eliminates those categories.

Paul writes, “There is neither Jew nor Greek… for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28).

Christ died for every person you meet.

That changes everything.

Perhaps your hardest neighbor is not the one living next door.

Perhaps it is the difficult coworker.

The family member who hurt you.

The person whose opinions differ from yours.

The stranger who seems nothing like you.

God does not ask us to approve of everything people do. He calls us to love them because He loves them.

That love begins with prayer. When we pray for someone, it becomes much harder to hate them. As Christ’s mercy reshapes our hearts, barriers begin to fall. Not because people deserve it, but because Christ’s grace has already reached us.

Reflect: Is there someone you have quietly decided is outside the reach of your compassion? How can praying for that person begin changing your heart?

Prayer: Gracious Savior, thank You for loving me when I was far from You. Break down the walls of pride and prejudice in my heart. Help me to see every person as someone You created and someone for whom You gave Your life. Amen.
