2 Corinthians 5:21 “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
Martin Luther called this verse “the great exchange,” and for good reason. In one sentence, Paul captures the very heart of the Gospel.
Imagine standing before a judge, guilty beyond any doubt. The evidence is overwhelming, and the verdict is certain. Then, just before the sentence is pronounced, someone steps forward and says, “I’ll take his place.”
Not only that, but the judge then credits you with that person’s perfect record.
It sounds impossible. It sounds unfair.
It is.
But that is exactly what happened at the cross.
Jesus, the only sinless person who has ever lived, took upon Himself every sin you have committed. Every selfish thought. Every harsh word. Every hidden failure. Every regret that still troubles your conscience. None of it was ignored. None of it was excused. Every sin was laid on Christ.
In return, God credits you with Jesus’ perfect righteousness. When the Father looks at you, He does not see your failures. He sees the perfect obedience of His Son.
This is why Christians never have to wonder whether they have done enough to earn God’s acceptance. We never could. Christ has already done everything necessary. Our standing before God rests entirely on what Jesus has accomplished for us.
That truth changes the way we live.
We no longer serve God because we are trying to earn His love. We serve because we already have it.
We no longer obey because we are afraid of being rejected. We obey because we have already been welcomed into His family.
We no longer carry the crushing burden of proving ourselves. Christ has already declared us righteous before God.
What a remarkable way to end this week’s journey. The Holy Spirit has shown us that we are forgiven, made into a new creation, reconciled to God, and sent into the world as Christ’s ambassadors. None of those blessings would be possible without the great exchange that took place on Calvary.
Your story is no longer defined by your sin.
It is defined by your Savior.
And because you belong to Him, you can live each day with confidence, joy, and peace, knowing that your identity is forever secure in Christ.

Prayer: Gracious Savior, thank You for taking my sin upon Yourself and giving me Your perfect righteousness. I could never earn the forgiveness You have freely given, yet You have made me Your own through Your life, death, and resurrection. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit so that I may live each day in the joy of my salvation and faithfully represent You wherever I go. Keep my eyes fixed on the cross, where the great exchange secured my eternal hope. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
